Graphics, Photo and Video: Apply for Fall/Winter 2021 Internships at NPR

NPR’s internship program includes several visually-oriented newsroom jobs, working with the News Apps, Visuals and Science teams.

Our paid fall/winter internship program runs from Oct. 4, 2021, to April 15, 2022. In this super-sized internship term, interns may have the opportunity to work with multiple teams in the NPR newsroom and develop a wider range of experience. DEADLINE EXTENDED: Applications are due Monday, July 19 at 5 p.m. ET.

To be eligible, you must be a college student (undergraduate or graduate) or a person who has graduated no more than 12 months prior to the start of the internship period. You must be planning to work from the United States and authorized to work in the United States throughout the internship term.

Digital News/Graphics Intern

For half of the internship, you will be part of the Digital News team, where you will pitch, report and write stories for NPR’s website and learn what it takes to make those stories go big across digital platforms. For the other half of the internship, you will be embedded with the News Apps/Graphics team, focusing on graphics, data visualization and visual storytelling.

This position could be a good fit for someone experienced with graphics and data analysis who wants to improve their reporting skills, or for a reporter with some graphics experience who wants to build stronger graphics/coding chops.

This internship has the flexibility to be on site at our Washington, D.C., office, fully remote, and/or a hybrid version of the two based on the intern’s preference.

Photo Editing Intern

This internship is an opportunity to learn more about the world of photo editing. Our goal isn’t to make you into a photo editor; we view this internship as a chance for you to understand what it is like to be an editor and improve your visual literacy, which can help you become a better photographer.

Who should apply

We’re looking for candidates that have a strong photojournalism background. An interest in editing, or experience with video/photo editing is a nice plus. We also want folks who can tell us what they would like to accomplish during their time at NPR. What do you want to learn? What do you want to try? We try to shape each internship around our intern, so we rely on you to tell us what goals you have for your time with us!
